What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

At Lincoln Park Aesthetics, laser skin resurfacing is a nonsurgical aesthetic procedure that utilizes pulsating beams of light to exfoliate dead and damaged skin one layer at a time. You may have heard it called a laser peel or a skin resurfacing treatment. The procedure is great for addressing facial wrinkles and lines and for improving skin blemishes, such as acne scars, pigmentation, and other flaws. Based on the needs of your skin and skin type, our aesthetics team can customize your laser skin resurfacing treatment by making specific adjustments to the laser. This treatment is called IPL, please see the IPL page for more information or call us.

Can I have Laser Skin resurfacing?

Are you displeased with your skin's appearance and/or texture? If you have sun damage, acne scars, age spots, wrinkles and fine lines, pigmentation, or redness troubles, then laser skin resurfacing may address these cosmetic flaws. In addition, it works wonders for both men and women who have scaly patches, rough texture, or other irregularities. Laser skin resurfacing is not suggested for anyone who has very dark skin or active acne. We also want you to know that there is some downtime associated with these laser treatments. Depending on the condition of your skin, you may need up to 2 – 3 weeks for your skin to normalize.

Our Laser Skin Resurfacing Technique

You will have your laser skin resurfacing sessions in a private room at Lincoln Park Aesthetics. A topical anesthetic may be used to numb treated areas of the face. For the whole face or more intense laser treatments, a form of sedation may be used. Throughout the laser session, we hope you can be at ease in our special treatment chair while the laser passes over your skin. It will directly target the specific sections you select for rejuvenation. You may feel the warmth from the laser followed by cool air from the system's built-in temperature control. The laser will destroy damaged and dead skin cells. As the laser reaches into the deeper layers of your skin, it will activate your body to produce new collagen growth.

What to Expect

Following a mild laser skin resurfacing treatment, a healing serum will be applied to the skin and you can return home for your recovery. The skin will appear red, and there may be some irritation and swelling. This should subside within a couple of days, and the peeling process will last over a 3 – 5-day timeframe. If you are having a deep, more intense session, your recovery period will take longer. The treated areas may be covered by dressings. The irritation, swelling, and burning symptoms will be more intense and last much longer. All patients should limit their sun exposure after their resurfacing session and use sun protection regularly. No matter which level of skin resurfacing you have, your skin will naturally crust and flake off. Your skin should feel softer while looking clearer, rejuvenated, and younger once healed.
