What are Chemical Peels?

To provide the highest quality results from chemical peel treatments, Lincoln Park Aesthetics provides you with numerous choices. Your customized chemical peel with exfoliating solutions (such as salicylic, glycolic, trichloroacetic, and lactic acids) will reveal healthier, more radiant skin. At our Chicago, IL office, our team offers chemical peel treatments that help to minimize skin irregularities, including scars, fine lines, wrinkles, dry patches, hyperpigmentation problems, and more. Chemical peels work by removing damaged, dead skin cells with the application of a specific treatment on your skin that causes the oldest layer to peel off. When your skin heals and starts to repair and rejuvenate itself, you may see a clearer, smoother complexion. A chemical peel facial is a noninvasive option to make your complexion radiant and may be appropriate for the face and neck.

Variations of OUr Chemical Peels at LPA

In our Chicago, IL office, we offer chemical peels in several levels of strength (light, medium, and deep) to accommodate our patients' skin care concerns and goals.

Superficial peels
You can have a light, superficial chemical peel on a lunch break and return back to your routine as normal. This level of peel will remove the outer layer of your skin (the epidermis), giving your complexion a more radiant appearance and softer texture. We usually suggest that you receive a superficial peel about once a month. Many patients start with a superficial peel (like an alpha hydroxy acid peel) and work up to the more advanced peels.

Medium peels
A medium-level chemical peel reaches further into your skin (to the dermis), and we advise to have this level of facial treatment over an extended weekend. A medium peel may be formulated with trichloroacetic and glycol acids. You may also need to prepare yourself for more discomfort during and after the treatment. Medium-depth peels are for patients who have significant damage to their skin, such as deeper age lines and darker pigmentation problems.

Deep peels
The most advanced of the three levels of peels is the deep peel (made with phenol and trichloroacetic acid). A deep peel will require the lengthiest recovery time. This is an aggressive treatment that can leave your face peeling, itchy, and swollen for 2 – 3 weeks. Patients who receive a deep chemical peel generally have dark age spots, sun-damaged skin, significant acne scars, or deep-seated scars. As this strength of peel is generally uncomfortable for most patients, we will provide you with mild anesthesia prior to your treatment.

Can I have a chemical peel with my skin type?

Receiving the recommendations of a skin professional is the first part of the journey to smooth, healthy skin. At Lincoln Park Aesthetics, we will assess your skin during an examination in our office before selecting a chemical peel treatment for the best results. Chemical peel candidates, both women and men, will have visible concerns in their skin, such as scars, rough patches, hyperpigmentation, flaky skin, sun spots, fine lines, and much more. We can recommend different types of peels to match your needs and concerns.

Our Chemical Peel Technique

On the day of your chemical peel appointment at Lincoln Park Aesthetics, you can expect to have your treatment in a private room. In a relaxed position, your peel will be administered to your face and neck. The type of chemical peel and the length of time on your skin will be determined in your chemical peel consultation. Most chemical peels are removed with a neutralizing agent. We will put soothing serums on your treated skin. If you have a deep peel, we may dress your facial skin in a bandage for your protection.

What to Expect

The intensity and depth of your chemical peel will likely determine how long your recovery period will be. Your facial skin may look irritated, feel itchy, and peel for a few days to a couple of weeks. We can set you up with an at-home skin care routine after your chemical peel for longer-lasting results.

Once you are at home in recovery, please follow the directives of your chemical peel provider. Please keep in mind that no matter how badly your skin itches, it is not wise to pick the skin off. You may cause scarring to your facial skin. Limiting your exposure to the sun is also very beneficial. We advise that you wear sunscreen anytime you are in the sun's rays.
