What is IPL?

If you struggle with how your skin looks because of sun damage or dark spots, Lincoln Park Aesthetics can offer you a skin consultation at our Chicago, IL office. You may benefit from an aesthetic treatment called intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. Men and women with hyperpigmentation concerns on the face and neck may see impressive results with our IPL treatments using the Cynosure Icon™ aesthetic platform. By igniting your natural regeneration process and boosting collagen production with intense wavelengths of light, IPL can produce better skin tone and texture. As your skin heals, you should see a healthier layer with a more even tone and decreased spots of pigmentation. Find out more in a confidential consultation at our office.

Do I qualify for IPL Photofacials?

An IPL photofacial reaches the deeper layers of your skin to improve several complexion issues (particularly sun spots and brown lesions) with little or no downtime. The best candidates for IPL treatments at Lincoln Park Aesthetics may have many issues with their skin, including sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), rough texture, visible pores, flushing, freckles, melasma, sun and age spots, or dilated capillaries. We will examine your skin to determine if you are a candidate for IPL at your initial consultation.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL is performed in about 20 – 30 minutes in one of our minor procedure rooms if no other treatments are performed. To prepare for the procedure, your IPL technician will wash and dry your skin before covering your eyes with goggles. The IPL photofacial is administered using a handheld device that passes over your skin while emitting pulses of light energy. While many patients may have some discomfort during the IPL photofacial, it is generally tolerable given the quick treatment time.

What to Expect

With no recovery period needed after a photofacial treatment, you can leave our office with no downtime. Your skin may be a little red and inflamed. This will decrease on its own as the day continues and may be masked with makeup if you want. Lincoln Park Aesthetics advises patients to keep a soothing serum on the skin's surface to decrease any irritation and promote healing. It may also help to take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to ease swelling. After several days, the irregularities that rested under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then start to flake away. It is very important to keep your skin protected from the sun at all times after an IPL photofacial treatment and to not pick at your skin while it heals. While you should see and feel some improvements in your skin after the first treatment, your complexion will attain ideal results with multiple IPL treatments. Our aesthetics team may suggest 3 – 6 treatments scheduled once a month at Lincoln Park Aesthetics for ideal results.
